Subaru Outback returns as an EV

2026 Subaru Trailseeker

Subaru's all-new electric Outback will go on sale in the UK at the start of 2026.

The new Subaru E-Outback (known in the US as the Trailseeker) is, essentially, a spiritual successor to the Outback estate (the latest Outback now being an SUV sold in the US). Though technically also an SUV, the E-Outback has a squared-off estate-like shape with rugged design elements and permanent all-wheel drive.

With a 74.6kWh battery, the E-Outback promises a range of more than 260 miles, and it's powerful, with its dual motors making a combined 375PS. It'll tow up to 1600kg and has a 21cm ground clearance for challenging terrain.

Under the skin, based on the same mechanical underpinnings as the forthcoming Subaru Uncharted and the Subaru Solterra.

No UK prices or specs have been announced for the E-Outback yet, but we do know it'll go on sale in 2026, probably in the summer.

Though technically an SUV, the E-Outback has definite estate car styling traits.

The E-Outback comes with a boxy shape and a new-look front end. It's some 16cm longer than another new Subaru, the Solterra, and sports a set of (non-functional) skid plates sit fore and aft, with roof rails and lots of black plastic cladding to give it a rugged look. It'll ride on alloy wheels between 18 inches and 20 inches in size, depending on the spec.

cludes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard features include wireless 15W phone chargers for both driver and passenger, and high-powered USB-C charge points to keep other devices topped up.

The E-Outback also gets Subaru's EyeSight suite of safety systems, which includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

The E-Outback's infotainment screen is the largest ever seen in a Subaru.

The new E-Outback has a new 77kWh battery pack, which gives a range of more than 279 miles. Dual motors drive all four wheels, with a total of 380PS, which translates to a very quick 4.4-second 0-62mph time.
